Four cyclists are in the hospital after a car ran over them in Venice. The incident occurred during the morning of this Tuesday. Authorities say the incident happened around 8:30 am, when three men and one woman were hit by a vehicle while traveling east on the main road.
According to authorities from the Florida Highway Patrol, an elderly woman was the cause of this tragic accident.
Residents described the incident as a shattered, chaotic and horrifying scene along a busy highway in Venice. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Jo Ann Stapleton, a Wfla resident. However, the authorities confirmed that it was an accident.
“At some point, the preliminary investigation shows that they were moving from outside to inside the lane. During the course of this transition, in that change, it was when they were hit, “said Lt. Greg Bueno of the Florida Highway Patrol. The cyclists were taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Officials are still trying to piece together the events that led to the accident to discover who was really at fault. “We are going to evaluate the driver for his ability to drive a vehicle,” Bueno added. “It’s a reminder to be careful with cyclists, we have to be aware of their presence on the road. They are allowed to be here. However, they have rules that must also follow. ”
This area is popular with cyclists. The sports season is in full swing and residents of the community say the roads have been congested.
“If I were in charge, I would definitely reverse the speed limit and make sure that people slow down,” said another resident named Victoria Bischof to Wfla.
Many are praying for a quick recovery and are hoping that everyone will learn a lesson from this. “Be careful, be careful when you drive,” Stapleton said. The identities have not been revealed at this time. It is not clear if charges will be filed.
According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, the Tampa Bay area is considered the worst place in the country to ride a bicycle.
However, among all the counties, Pinellas was considered the most fatal, where its main cities are St. Pete and Clearwater.
The report says that in 2017, a total of 108 cyclists died on the streets of Florida and in 2016 they died 140. But, this year, Florida can be considered the most fatal state since until September, they have registered 95 deaths.
